Lee Dobbins asked:

Stress is something almost all of us have to live with. It’s a fact of life, and while it can have it’s beneficient effects, like spurring us on to greater achievements and making us far more focused and intense at a task, taken to an extreme stress can be detrimental to a person, both psychologically and physiologically. One of more annoying effects of extreme stress is a scientific condition called Telogen Effluvium. In layman’s terms, this scary sounding name actually means that a person’s hair starts thinning due to stress.

Stress doesn’t directly contribute to one’s hair loss, however. Despite what most people may think, it’s actually a proven fact that the stress a person feels doesnt have a direct physical bearing on that person’s hair loss. Being stressed out doesn’t cause your hair to pop off your head faster; rather, when a person is under stress, he/she actually falls into certain personal habits that lead to hair loss. These personal habits ARE a direct effect of stress, and dealing with them will help to minimize stress-related hair loss. Here are a few of these habits, and a few precautions you can take to avoid them:

Poor Diet – When people are overstressed, they tend to neglect their eating habits. A person who has an unbalanced diet will eventually suffer from a lot of different physical ailments, and frankly hair loss would be the least of a person’s worries in this case. However, hair loss is a relatively mild warning sign that you should correct your diet and start eating right. To show how a poor diet affects a person’s hair, here is a little fact: normally a person WILL shed hair, roughly about 100 follicles a day, andthese are eventually replaced by the body naturally.

People who have an unbalanced diet will usually lose 200 to 300 hairs in a given day, more than the body can replenish immediately, and THIS causes hair loss. By getting a balanced diet rich in protein, with low fats and carbohydrate content, this type of hair loss can eventually be overcome, as the added nutrients will bring the rate at which you shed your hair to normal levels, and eventually your scalp will replenish your hair naturally.

Alchohol And Cigarettes – sad to say, as a result of stress some people turn to vices to cope with the stress. Alchohol and cigarettes are relaxants, and being readily available and legal, are sometimes overindulged in by people going through periods of high stress. While taken in moderate amounts, both of these vices already carry their own corresponding health risks. However, in times of stress even people who are merely casual social drinkers or smokers may suddenly increase their intake as a means of coping. During these times, the increased intake of alchohol or nicotine causes physical problems. You may have noticed that habitual chain-smokers, for example, have yellowed finger nails or yellow teeth.

Aside from these obvious effects, it’s been shown in studies that hair loss is also one fo the effects of over indulgence in booze or smokes. The remedy for this is obvious; quit smoking or drinking. However, even if you’re not ready or willing to give them up just yet, then at the very least cut back a bit, and avoid the habit of turning to the bottle or grabbing your lighter whenever you get stressed out.

Hair-Fiddling – funny as it seems, a lot of people still carry nervous habits with them throughout life that become more apparent in times of stress. Some of these can actually lead to hair loss. There are people who bite their nails, fiddle with their purse, twirl a ballpen… then there are the people who fiddle with their hair in one form or another. Some girls, for example, have the habit of chewing the ends of their hair when nervous, which leads to a lot of split ends. The nervous habits that most lead to hair loss are ones that involve more drastic versions of hair-nibbling, like actually pulling or twisting your own hair when annoyed, or scratching your head when stumped.

If you’re one of the people who indulges in these nervous habits, then the solution is pretty much to discipline yourself to stop yanking your hair out by the roots whenever your kids blow up the kitchen or your boss starts screaming at you for your deadlines. If you must have a nervous habit, find something relatively harmless – buy a stressball, it’ll even strengthen your grip.

Despite these sage little pieces of advice, however the fact remains that stress is still, ultimately, the cause of your hair falling out. The remedies given here are not permanent fixes, just patch jobs to stall the problem. If you really want to stop your own personal case of Telogen Effluvium (man, the name still sounds scary!), find a way to deal with your stress. Learn to laugh at your problems more, read a book, get more exercise, find a new hobby.

Above all, keeping healthy and having a positive, light, and happy outlook on the world keeps you from getting stressed out. Keep a smile on your face and in your heart, and you’ll be surprised how easy it can get dealing the universe in general.

Kansieo.com

Chao Wei Hung asked:

Studies have linked salt intake to hair loss. Sodium from common table salt is retained in the tissues of the scalp (and throughout the body), hampering their functions.

A nutritionally balanced diet will not be of much benefit if the body is incapable of transmuting the elements it requires. As we get older, the body is less and less able to absorb nutrients. This is initially indicated by the fact that the stomach fails to produce as much acid as it did earlier in life, evidenced by the increased presence of gas, heartburn, and bloating. Sensations of exhaustion after a meal tend to point to the digestion process also burning up too much energy.

Protein, which is the building block of hair, is usually the first victim of poor digestion.

Proper digestion involves four principal stages, and begins in the mouth with the production of saliva. Saliva launches the digestive course by breaking down carbohydrates and preparing food for peristalsis, the journey through the digestive tract. The secretion of stomach acids is activated by the chewing action.

The second stage happens in the stomach with the secretion of enzymes from the pancreas. These enzymes break down the food, and are replaced from enzymes found only in raw foods. Since the quintessential western diet accentuates cooked foods over raw, the pancreas is frequently unable to secrete adequate levels of enzymes by middle age, and requires the assistance of an enzyme supplement. Ironically, while a supplement will assist the pancreas, it will also weaken it by making dependent on the supplement.

The third stage involves the secretion of the hydrochloric acid to further the breakdown of food. Heartburn results from an insufficient level of this acid.

Kansieo.com

Maria Karla asked:

Ninety percent of hair loss cases in women can be attributed to hereditary thinning of hair. Thinning of hair in such cases starts in an early age (20-30) which can even lead to pattern baldness in women. However, hair loss in women is not always of that serious nature. Normally, hair loss in women can be reverted.

There are a number of reasons for such sudden but restorable hair loss. It is advisable that women in such cases see a hair restoration physician who is able to evaluate the causes for the hair loss. Young women having sudden hair loss may also need to do a hair analysis test for ascertaining nutritional deficiencies or for ruling out certain causes. The sudden hair loss occurring in women can be categorized as follows:

Drugs that cause hair loss

Telogen effluvium

There are a large number of drugs that cause hair loss leading to a condition which is called telogen effluvium (TE). In this case, most hair in active growth phase is shifted into a resting (telogen), non-growth stage. Hairs that remain in a non growing stage for few months are finally shed in large numbers. Some times this condition can be confused with genetic female hair loss. However, normally TE is characterized by generalized thinning of the hair which does not follow any particular pattern. There is more thinning on top of the scalp than at the sides and back of the scalp. The hairs that are shed are typically telogen hairs which can be recognized by a small bulb of keratin on the root end. Drugs that are known to cause sudden hair loss are the following:

o	Oral contraceptives

o	Anti thyroid medication

o	Blood pressure medication (such as beta-blockers or water pills)

o	Blood thinning medication such as coumarin, heparin and propanolol

o	Excessive vitamin A

o	Cholesterol-lowering drugs

o	Anti-histamines/ulcer drugs

o	Anti-convulsant drugs

o	Anti-thyroid drugs

o	Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

o	Arthritis drugs

o	Tricyclic anti-depressant drugs

Telogen effluvium is not normally a permanent form of hair loss. Eventually, the hair follicles can recover. Recovery and return to normal hair density is very slow and can also take many months after the causative factor is removed.

Anagen Effluvium

Besides the telogen effluvium, there is another condition called as anagen effluvium which can be induced by certain drugs. Drugs that cause this kind of hair loss are cytoxic drugs that are given for cancer therapy. These drugs and other such stop the proliferation of cells which are responsible for hair growth. In contrast to telogen effluvium, anagen effluvium involves the shedding of the anagen hair which can be recognized by a tapered or feathered root end. This condition results in rapid hair loss, sometimes to extent of loosing all the scalp hair. The hair loss can be very extensive, but often reversible when the medication is stopped.

Other than the drugs causing hair loss, there are a number of other factors responsible for sudden hair loss. These include the following:

o	Diet deficiency – Lack of vitamins or minerals and particularly iron

o	Crash dieting – Hair follicles in this case do not grow for the lack of nutrients.

o	Hormones/Pregnancy/Childbirth – Abnormal hormone levels in women especially during pregnancy and child birth are known to result in hair loss due to lack of nutrients, as the embryo or feeding the baby causes a drain on supply

o	Fever induced alopecia – High body temperature, in response to infectious chronic disease, stresses dividing cells of the hair follicle and they respond with reduced activity and stop growing.

o	Ultra violet (UV) radiation – Low dose UV radiation may destroy some of the sensitive hair follicle cells and slow down growth activity

o	Acute blood loss – Blood loss effectively starves the hair follicles of nutrients forcing them into reduced activity

o	Hyperthyroidism or
Hypothyroidism – Under and over activity of thyroid hormones have a profound affect on hair follicle activity leading to hair loss.

o	Extreme physical stress such as surgery – Surgery places extreme physical and emotional stress on the individual and can lead to telogen effluvium

o	Emotional stress – Chronic emotional stress or sudden shock can adversely affects hair follicles although the mechanism by which it works is not known

o	Severe illness – Severe or chronic illness alters the normal functioning of the human body and this may have an impact on hair follicles.

o	Excessive washing, drying and perming – All these process cause disruption of hair cuticles at some places resulting in swelling and fraying at those places. It may ultimately lead to hair loss.

But as in most cases hair loss is not permanent. Hair growth can be restored after the factor causing hair loss is removed.

Caffeinated Content – Members-Only Content for WordPress

Jim Hampton asked:

So you’ve checked your family tree and you can find no one with balding or even receding hair. You’ve checked both your mothers and fathers side of the genealogy tree and nothing. So you have unexplained hair loss and you can’t find any good reasons why you are experiencing this.

This article will go into something that probably you never thought of before that might be the culprit in the recession of your hair.

It’s all around us and you probably don’t even know the ramifications but if you cannot find any reason for your unexplained hair loss then maybe you ought to investigate the environment that you currently live and work in on a daily basis.

Toxins surround us in the environment that we live by the materials that use everyday. A lot of emphasis is taken on the genetics of the situation when someone loses hair. But because we live in a society that is constantly experimenting with new drugs and ways to grow food and increase productivity in materials that the level of toxicity has risen to a level that may have affected certain people.

If you are experiencing unexplained hair loss and you have done your due diligence in researching your family tree and have come up with no solid foundation why it’s happening then you might want to switch your focus to your environment.

Because we live in a high paced society with constant changes in our environment we are surrounded with poisons and toxins that before we never considered to be dangerous which may cause fatigue, make us sick and could also be the reason for our hair loss?

Toxins exist in heavy metals and metal salts which if inhaled over a long period of time can cause hair loss. I know that seems like a far fetched idea but it is proven that this type of situation can cause hair loss. Why do you think there is so much emphasis on cleaning up contaminated waste areas left by industry? Toxic waste is all around us and it seems invisible with visible effects upon us.

Other chemicals that may contribute to our unexplained hair loss are gold, arsenic and mercury.

One of the silent killers of this day and age is the advent of arsenic. Arsenic comes in a variety of forms you probably didn’t even think of. Arsenic exists in glassware, fungicides, insecticides and in wood preservatives that is sold in handyman stores. More than likely arsenic is one of the ingredients in the chair that you’re sitting on right now. Arsenic has been one of the ingredients in weed killer as well.

When we use these products we are in physical contact with toxins and prolonged use will definitely affect our health. You need to be aware of this fact when diagnosing your condition of unexplained hair loss. Take a look at your environment and that could be the key to understanding your hair loss.

Because a lot of emphasis is mentioned in the field of staying healthy with the proper amount of vitamins for our body in order to provide enough protein to our scalp, having too much of a good thing may be detrimental. I am talking about the vitamins that we may ingest and we might just be taking too many of them.

Research has shown that taking an over abundance of vitamins may be a contributing factor in hair loss. That is a hard fact to swallow but it’s true specifically when it comes to vitamin A. Consumed in large quantities which is over the regulated amount can be counter productive to your health so you also must take heed on that fact as well.

This article has shown you that unexplained hair loss can definitely be linked to something and if all else fails make sure that you check your environment that you live and work in on a daily basis.

If you are looking for alternatives to growing back your hair there are some herbal remedies that might pique your interest in finding out more information as well.

Caffeinated Content – Members-Only Content for WordPress

Andrew Stratton asked:

When a doctor sees a patient suffering from severe stomach ache, he/she knows that it is nothing to do with the dress or some perfume the person uses, but in fact goes deep inside their body. The root cause of this something he/she ate or contaminated water. Similarly, every problem needs to be traced to its roots to identify the reasons or the culprit and then be treated. When a person sees receding hairline, or while washing their hair, they find more than usual number of strands coming away, they need to find out what is the core reason for the same. It could be anything from the water, to shampoo to food they have been consuming or a change in diet also will have adverse effects. Different people have different reactions, for some it might be allergies, fever or burning sensation, while others face hair loss.

Some who suffer from baldness accept it as part of life, while others could go into depression. If we observed famous celebrities who are bald, we would realize that we never wondered why they are bald or what happened and sympathize with them. Why is this? Just because they are famous or don’t they advertise about it? Andre Agassi and Michael Jordon are two sport stars who are also bald, almost all the time and were excellent in what they did. So, being bald has nothing to do with one’s capabilities or working abilities, so we should not judge someone based on their looks.

After your consultation with the dermatologist, if the diagnosis says it is because of the chemicals in the shampoo, they need to use another medically approved shampoo and conditioner. If the shampoo is very strong, it could harm the scalp instead of promoting hair growth. Also, you will notice your scalp becomes dry and hair does not look shiny or alive after a day. This is because the chemical in the shampoo is eating away all the nutrients in your hair leaving it dry and prone to breakage. You need to use a mild shampoo, or something specific to your hair condition instead of any shampoo off the counters.

If it is what you eat, you need to make a note to change your dietary patterns. For a person who is used to eating fast food, or more of fatty foods, they might be depriving their body from getting the required amount of vitamins and minerals which is necessary to keep their system working like clockwise work. Begin by maintaining a food journal, where you write down every morsel or sip you take from the time you wake up till you are ready to go to sleep. This way, you can keep track of all you eat, and monitor the nutrient value gained from each of them. Eating oily, fatty food will attack your system giving you high blood pressure or heart problem, and this need to be avoided to help keep your hair cells alive and growing well.

Caffeinated Content – Members-Only Content for WordPress

Jen Carter asked:

Ladies, over-treated hair is the leading cause of hair loss in women. Take a break from hair dyes, perms, relaxers, and the likes. According to the FDA, over the counter dyes and chemical treatments tend to be the highest of all complaints. Are you one of the many people that dyed their hair, only to have it fall out in clumps? You’re not alone. It has happened to many people. Now, what can we do about it?

Stop using relaxers. Whether these products contain lye, or are lye-free, they still do serious damage to you hair. Both products contain chemicals that ‘fry’ your hair. While that may sound harsh, it’s simply the truth. If you must use a relaxer, take precaution. Read the directions and follow them thoroughly. If you have sensitive skin, apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the calm to prevent irritation.

Unfortunately, there’s very little you can do to bring your hair back to its natural state. If you’ve noticed thinning and bald patches from excessive hair dying, stop dying your hair! Let your hair heal itself. It will take several weeks before you notice re-growth, unless, of course-you do more damage during the healing process. Then it will take longer. The moral of the story: be good to your hair, and it will heal itself over time.

Carefully comb wet hair, avoid brushes. Do not rush through the combing process. Whipping a comb through your hair pulls on the hair’s follicles. As does elastic bands or pony tail holders. Remove them carefully. Do not yank them out of your hair. In addition, do not use curling irons or blow dryers on a regular basis. Especially if you’ve noticed thinning or bald spots. Absolutely need gel or hair spray? Try alcohol-free styling products. The alcohols in gel and spray only makes dry damaged hair more susceptible to further breakage.

Should you decide to dye your hair. Try a semi-permanent hair dye, which will wash out in six to eight weeks. You should ALWAYS avoid metallic hair dyes. These are the culprits for a lot of hair related horror stories. Leave all dyes on for the specified amount of time. If the bottle tells you twenty-five minutes, don’t leave it on for thirty. Those extra five minutes can actually take its toll on your hair, promoting further damage. Always do a strand test to make sure that you’re not allergic to the dye you purchased.

Kansieo.com

W. Darren asked:

Most men fear balding for the presumed reason that it will prevent them from finding a partner. The idea of isolation, depression, and reclusion sets in. You kept saying no man is an island. There is someone bound to make you whole. Now, the race is on.

You scour the dating scene in order to find the one before you lose all hair strands or what was left of it. The stigma lies on the fact that male possesses a shred of vanity as well. And some assume that hair loss will render them appalling. In addition, a number of men also perceive balding as a huge roadblock in their career path; a path filled with mockery and discrimination. Then there are a few who think that they were not blessed with the right shape helmet to pull off a shaved head.

For decades, hair loss was an accepted truth. It is a sign of age, of distinction, and of experience. Unfortunately, a shift occurred. Media started to portray alluring men having thick tresses. Incorporating hair caressing in any and every romantic scene is but an added insult to injury. Do you know Fabio? The face plastered in most covers of romantic pocket books? Deny it all you want but his hair triggers envy all over.

As these figures start to embed in people’s awareness, the society began to absorb the opinion that the ideal man has a full head of air. To be fair, this is not something that the media purposely created to inflict self-consciousness among men. It is but a by-product or an offshoot from the image that they thought the public wants to see.

Have you seen a hair growth commercial? In their spiel, they usually depict a bald (or prematurely balding) man as lonely, abandoned, “unliked” and desperate. Then he discovers their product and alas! Chick magnet personified; career on the fast lane; Life is sweet. With this thrown into your face, who wouldn’t fear hair loss?

But as if to rectify the erroneous impression, media is now presenting bald as sexy, as masculine. Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, and Taye Diggs are a few of the men who exude sexiness in spite of having shinny chrome-domes. Who says bald is not attractive? Next time you enjoy the ball game, look around. And you are certain to see brothers just like you embracing the limelight. Speaking of ball game, do you know that you can advertise using your bald head? Rent it out and rake in cash. It will only take a few spray (or stroke) of water-soluble paint and the distinguishing logo of an advertiser to make money while enjoying the game.

See here, resorting to cover-up is not needed. Why not embrace the inevitable?

It would seem that balding is a life-shattering event that will leave you in shambles (given the quantity of hair loss treatments and whatnot.) In the grand scheme of things, hair loss is not really that big of a deal when compared to losing a loved one or a friend, or your country’s reputation. However, fact remains that we still have to look at ourselves in the mirror to be able to address such issues.

Kansieo.com

Sally Miller asked:

A laser hair loss treatment works under the premise that light can heal. This alternative treatment is for both men and women, and it works to stimulate new hair growth, as well as aid thinning hair and a problematic scalp. The laser treatment is designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing energy. Its basic theory relies on the fact that light is linked to cell function. Encouraging healthy cell function should work to promote regeneration of healthy hair.

Laser therapy is an efficient use of light

On the plus side of laser hair loss treatment, it is very efficient, as it uses low power requirements. The equipment is also easy to use and requires simply placing a hood over the patient’s head and pressing the “Start” button on the machine. Laser therapy utilizes different light “doses” to produce the desired effect on the scalp and balding areas. A laser treatment takes about 30 minutes, with sessions once a week for 9 to 10 weeks, if not more, before you could see results. The proper amount of light must be concentrated on the problem areas in order for this treatment to have a benefit.

Just as sunlight, through the process known as photosynthesis, helps plants grow and thrive, the energy of light through laser treatment can help aid in the healing of human injuries. Studies are currently being conducted, with reports to be published in scientific journals upon completion.

After week 5 or 6 of the laser hair loss treatment, your scalp should notice an improvement to problem areas, including the reduction of dandruff, if that had been present. Excessive hair loss should be stopped or greatly reduced somewhere between week 6 and week 9 of the treatment sessions. After week 9, you should see hair growth beginning in bald spots and re-growth being generated in spots that were thinning. The remainder of your hair should experience a growth spurt, as well, with thicker hair strands. After the initial hair re-growth, follow-up and maintenance appointments with laser light therapy are recommended, as well as “booster” treatments once a month for continued hair generation.

Lasercomb

There is a new FDA-approved laser treatment, as well, involving a “Lasercomb.” This comb works only if you have significant areas of hair left on your scalp. As you comb through your hair, a laser is supposed to be directed at your hair follicles to stimulate new growth. The cost of a Lasercomb can be as much as $500. The directions tell you not to use it every day, only for a few days a week for about 15 minutes per day. It will take approximately three to six months using a Lasercomb to actually determine if this laser hair loss treatment is working for your hair.

Minoxidil

Almost every hair loss treatment ends its advertisement with something to the effect of, “when used in conjunction with Minoxidil.” Minoxidil is the only FDA-approved topical solution and supplement combination to combat hair loss and promote hair re-growth. Hair loss treatments including Minoxidil can show an improvement to your hair in as little as two to three months.

The two-step program that Provillus offers works well to promote all aspects of healthy hair regeneration. Utilizing a topical solution of Minoxidil, a dropper-full should be applied to the affected areas on the scalp twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. In combination with that, a supplement containing Vitamin B6, Magnesium, Biotin, Horsetail Silica (used by the ancient Greeks and Romans), and Para-Amino Benzoic Acid (this helps reduce wrinkles) is recommended to provide nourishment for your entire body, but particularly for the hair follicles. The nutrients are intended to provide a healthy foundation for the hair follicles to generate new growth.

While lasers are great inventions and offer much to technological applications, including limiting invasive surgeries and tendering opportunities to have multiple types of surgeries more easily and with less recovery time, laser hair loss treatment can probably still use some assistance in re-growing hair. Consider the FDA-approved drug, Minoxidil, to aid in stimulating hair growth. Provillus’ two-step treatment program is a hard combination to beat.

hair loss

AJ Stamp asked:

Hair loss is a common annoyance for men and women. It’s embarrassing, causes low self-esteem, and leaves us wondering how we can stop losing hair. In order to understand hair loss, we need to discuss some of the common reasons of why we lose our hair.

Stress is a common factor in hair loss for men and women. It is no surprise that there are many causes of stress in our lives these days. Finding ways to reduce the amount of stress can help you to stop losing hair, and keep you healthier in general. If you can’t change anything in your life, try a stress-reducing exercise such as meditation or yoga.

Too many trips to the beauty salon can also cause hair loss. When hair is processed and dyed multiple times, it can cause your hair to become weak and break off. Use more gentle hair color and perms to cause less damage and stop losing hair. Weekly conditioner treatments can help repair damaged hair. To prevent your hair from breaking off, never brush it when it’s wet, and don’t tie it up more than a couple of days in a row.

Many people lose their hair a few months following major surgery. This is due to the extreme stress caused by the surgery and shouldn’t cause need for concern. This type of hair loss is usually temporary, and you should stop losing hair quickly. When hair loss is due to medications for serious illnesses, you should expect to stop losing hair after you’ve completed your treatments.

Another important factor in hair loss is that hair loss can be hereditary. That doesn’t mean that it is inevitable if there is baldness in your family, but you should take extra precautions if hair loss is impending. Take extra care with your hair and scalp, and try to keep stress to a minimum in your life. When hair loss is hereditary, there are fewer options for regrowth.

As you can see there are quite a few reasons for hair loss in men and women. What we didn’t discuss are the remedies for hair loss and regrowth. You can find more information by visiting our website.

Create a video blog
